Each step of an exterior detail in order, and how it differs from a car wash.

How deep interior cleaning deals with stains, odors and pet hair, and when the smell needs a repair first.

How machine polishing removes swirls and oxidation, and why the clear coat sets the limit.

What a ceramic coating really does, what it does not, and the prep that decides how it turns out.

Why lenses go yellow, how restoration works step by step, and the signs that call for a new headlamp.
Car detailing is a staged, hand-done clean and restoration of a car's paint, wheels, trim, lenses and cabin. A full detail follows a fixed order: wash and decontaminate, correct the paint if it needs it, add protection, then clean the interior. In the Willamette Valley, the wet half of the year adds road film, fir sap and moss spores that a quick wash leaves behind.
This guide splits that sequence into five pages. Each one stands on its own, so start with the problem in front of you.
| Stage | What it deals with | Read more |
|---|---|---|
| Wash and decontamination | road film, brake dust, tar, iron particles, sap | what a full exterior detail includes |
| Cabin work | stains, odors, pet hair, crumbs in the seat rails | interior detailing, problem by problem |
| Paint correction | swirl marks, haze, light scratches, oxidation | how polishing removes paint defects |
| Protection | water spots, UV fade, easier washing | ceramic coating and its limits |
| Lens restoration | yellow or foggy headlights | why headlights cloud and how restoration works |
The order matters more than the products. Polish a car that still carries bonded grit and the pad drags that grit across the clear coat. Coat a car before correcting it and the swirls sit under a hard, glossy layer for years. Clean the cabin last and the dust from exterior work never lands on fresh upholstery.
Few cars need all five. A quick way to sort it out:
Most owners do their own maintenance washes between details, which is sensible. One local point is worth knowing. The City of Springfield notes that water entering a storm drain does not go to a treatment plant; it runs to the Willamette or McKenzie River. The city asks residents not to use soap when washing on pavement. Washing on gravel or grass, or using a wash bay that captures its water, keeps the suds out of the drains.
